Low EC vs High EC Cocopeat: Which One Do You Actually Need?
The short answer: choose low EC (washed) cocopeat when plants root directly into it, hydroponics, berries, seedlings. Choose high EC (natural) when your own process washes, buffers or dilutes the material afterwards, blending lines, soil conditioning. Paying for washing you will redo is waste; skipping washing your crop needed is worse.
What EC actually measures
Electrical conductivity is a proxy for dissolved salts. Coconut husk grows by the sea and naturally carries potassium, sodium and chloride; unwashed cocopeat passes those salts to the root zone. EC is quoted from a water extraction, and the ratio matters enormously: the same material reads differently under different extraction methods. Never compare EC numbers without knowing how each was measured.

Note the sodium and chloride rows, these are what washing exists to reduce, and what a salt-sensitive crop feels first.
Deciding by crop and process

- What EC target, and measured by which method?
- Does your process include any washing or buffering step?
- Is the crop salt-sensitive, and at what growth stage does the substrate meet it?
- Do you need batch-level analysis with the shipment, and from which laboratory?
