Coco coir substrate for hydroponics, a sourcing guide
Hydroponic systems are less forgiving of substrate variation than almost any other application, because the substrate sits under constant irrigation and nothing in the root zone is buffered by soil. This guide covers what that means when you are buying, rather than when you are growing.

Why the buying question is different here
In an open field the substrate is one influence among many. In a hydroponic system it is the root zone, and every irrigation event passes through it. Salt content and grading therefore move from being characteristics to being control variables.
That is why hydroponic buyers tend to specify more tightly, test more often, and care more about consistency between deliveries than about any single delivery.
What to specify
- Preparation
- Washed low EC material is the usual starting point where irrigation chemistry is managed closely. Say whether you will buffer it yourself.
- Grading
- Grading determines the balance between water holding and air in the root zone. Raise it explicitly, because it is the specification most often left vague.
- Format
- Compressed blocks, loose bagged material, or coco husk chips blended in to open the mix up. Which one depends on how you fill and how you irrigate.
- Consistency tolerance
- How far material may vary between deliveries before it is a problem for you. Say the number, because your supplier cannot guess it.
Test the material yourself
Test through a laboratory you appointed, on the sample and then on the first delivery, for the properties that matter to your system. A result supplied by a seller is information about the seller.
Independent third party testing can be discussed for qualified commercial inquiries. Raise it during quotation rather than after an order is placed.
Blending for air
Where drainage matters more than water holding, coco husk chips are commonly blended into the mix rather than used alone. The proportion is yours to determine against your irrigation strategy, and it is not something we will prescribe.
What is confirmed rather than published
Salt content, pH, moisture, grading and expansion yield are confirmed for your order during quotation.
